Looking to bet on the Nets or the Knicks from within the Empire State this weekend? Now you can, at one of the nine legalized New York sportsbooks.
In this guide, I’ll run you through all of the rules and regulations about sports betting in NY, from the legal age limits to what you can and can’t wager on. Additionally, you can check out the best sportsbook promos and I’ll introduce you to my top-rated betting sites for New Yorkers in 2025.
A very limited form of single-game wager has actually been available inside four upstate casinos since 2013. But now, both online and retail in-person sports wagering are legal in New York state.
In July 2019, sports betting launched inside two NY tribal casinos – Rivers Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook at Tioga Downs. However, it was almost two and half years later before online sports betting went live in the Empire State, which finally took place in January 2022.
To start us off, here is a timeline where I have highlighted all of the major events in the New York sports betting journey so far. If and when any new landmark moments arise, I will add them at the earliest opportunity – so be sure to bookmark this page for updates.
Want a little something extra to get you started? There’s no such thing as a free lunch sadly, but with these New York sportsbook promos, you can enhance your overall online betting experience as a new customer.
All nine sportsbooks have a welcome offer to appeal to you ahead of the competition. But having tested all of these bonuses myself, there are the ones I believe to be the best:
If your first bet at DraftKings loses, you can get your stake back as a bonus bet up to a maximum of $1,000. What I like most about this DraftKings offer, is that you can deposit and bet as little as $5 to qualify, meaning that it’s suitable for almost everyone.
The welcome bonus at FanDuel offers something a little bit different from most New York sportsbooks. Here you can get $150 in bonus bets when you deposit at least $10 and wager at least $5 on any sport. Unlike the DK welcome offer, your initial bet doesn’t need to lose for you to get the bonus.
Just like DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook in NY gives you a 100% insurance bonus on your first wager. This means that if your first bet up to $1,000 loses, you will get the stake value back as a single-use bonus bet.
Of the nine legal sports betting sites in the Empire State, I have found four that stand out above the rest. Curious to know more? Check out my mini reviews of each one below:
Do you want to up the ante by placing multiple bets on a Knicks match? If so, there are no better New York sports betting apps than DK for NBA same-game parlays. Using the SGPx feature you can easily put together a parlay bet with two or more selections for any NBA game.
Not a huge basketball fan? Not to worry, in my experience, the DraftKings SGPx feature is great for most sports, including the NFL, NHL, and European soccer. Additionally, the collegiate sports betting options at DraftKings NY should not be overlooked.
Are you new to the New York sports betting scene online? Then FanDuel is probably the best place to start. The user-friendly interface is very easy and intuitive to navigate. Moreover, the first time that you use it the app will walk you through each step.
More of an experienced bettor? Not to worry, FanDuel has managed to be user-friendly whilst not appearing to be overly simplistic for us experienced bettors. You will find plenty of features and promos to keep you interested, such as the parlay profit boosts.
This is the official sportsbook of the New York Knicks, which is great for us as NBA fans – well, half of us at least. However, that’s not all that this betting site has to offer. The live chat customer service is the best I’ve experienced.
To add to that, you can earn rewards points while betting on the sportsbook that you can later use at land-based casino Caesars Resorts. And while it doesn’t have quite as many betting markets as FanDuel and DraftKings, this does make it less convoluted, which might suit some of you better.
If you like the sound of a user-friendly iOS app that looks cooler than any other, BetMGM is just the ticket. On top of that, you’ll find the most competitive odds here as well as a large selection of regular promos for existing customers.
The slight downside here is that the welcome offer that’s available in most of its other locations isn’t available on the BetMGM New York sports betting app. However, there is still a great $100 refer-a-friend bonus available.

The minimum legal age to place any form of sports bet in New York is 21 (online and in-person). Before you get started, here are a few essential points that you should know first:
There’s been a lot of information to digest thus far, hasn’t there? With that in mind, here’s my summary of the main pros and cons of New York sports betting:
You can register your online NY sportsbook account 100% remotely. All you need is your cell phone or laptop and your ID and SSN.
Got all that? Just follow these steps:
First up, select a New York sports betting site/app from the ones I’ve suggested above.
Now download the app or load the website URL and complete the signup process.
On some New York sportsbooks, you may have to verify your account by uploading a digital copy of your government-issued ID.
Check if you need to enter a promo or manually opt-in to activate the welcome offer with your chosen sportsbook.
Next, make your first deposit using one of the available payment methods. Most sportsbooks accept credit/debit cards, online banking, e-wallets (like PayPal), and prepaid cards.
Browse the selection of sports events and markets and place your first sports bet.
If and when you have some winnings, you can withdraw them, usually within 2 -5 business days on most NY betting sites.
Pretty much all New York sportsbooks use American odds format as the default display, which you should find is the easiest to read. There are two numbers that you need to understand – plus and minus.
When betting on sports in New York a few things are still illegal. For example, you won’t find markets on any of the following at an NY retail or online sportsbook:
You can bet on any college games involving out-of-state teams so long as the event isn’t taking place within New York state borders. Betting on NY-based collegiate teams or college sports games being played in New York is illegal.

However, when it comes to New York sports betting, your fanship needs to go out the window. Wagers need to be based on stats and login, not passion and will for your team to win.

New York Giants | New York Rangers | New York Knicks | New York Yankees |

I have covered all of the rules and regulations surrounding sports betting in the Empire State at some point in this article. But as you will have gathered by now, I’m a fan of putting together summaries and lists to provide you with an easy and quick reference point.
With that in mind, here are the most important laws for NY sports betting:
Do you want to know more about gambling in New York in general? Let’s take a break from sports betting for a minute and look at other forms of gambling:
There are nine tribal casinos located throughout New York state, as well as four upstate commercial casinos that opened in 2013. In total, you have around a dozen options when it comes to land-based casino gaming in the Empire State, but none of them are located in and around the city.
As in most states, real money online casinos remain illegal in New York. However, you do have alternatives in the form of sweepstakes casinos such as Wow Vegas and Stake.us.
Most of the tribal and commercial casinos in upstate New York have real money poker rooms where you can play in person. Online real money poker remains illegal, with no plans to legalize it currently in the pipeline.
Betting on horse races (online and in-person) is legal in the Empire State. There are three racetracks as well as multiple off-track (OTB) betting locations. Additionally, you can access a number of betting sites dedicated only to horse racing.
DFS has been legal in New York since 2016 with sites like FanDuel And DraftKings being the most popular.

My final piece of advice for you is probably the most important – avoid overseas and offshore sportsbooks at all costs. They are illegal, unregulated, and unsafe. Bottom line – only bet online with one of the nine legal New York sportsbooks covered in this article.
In summary, New York is one of the biggest US betting states in terms of revenue and total handle. You can wager online at one of the nine sportsbooks regardless of whether or not you are a resident.
